The Brit Awards came and went – an annual celebration of British music, with some international topics thrown in for good measure. It’s often the wardrobe malfunctions and mishaps that take the headlines from the event, and this year was no different. I built a Synthesio dashboard to see which aspects of the show drove most of the conversation this year, and below are the results.

The most popular nomination category from the public was Best British Artist Video. With One Direction included in the nominees, there was no surprise as to who would be winning on the big night. Directioners flooded Twitter telling announcing who they had voted for, and this took account for an astonishing 56% of the social share of voice.

Little Mix drove the most online excitement with the performance their hit, Shout Out To My Ex. The girl group also took away the prize for Best Single for this song.

Pop queen Katy Perry’s return to the music scene has caused a storm in the industry. Her performance of Chained to the Rhythm made more headlines. The dancing houses would’ve made enough of a headline for the fact they were just there, but one decided it would bring the house down all on its own, by falling off a stage.

It’s not often the laughing emoji make it as one of the most used ‘words’ in the word cloud, but this would be one of those times!

Perhaps the most popular performance from the night came from Ed Sheeran. He has yet again taken the world by storm with his two new singles which were both performed on the night. As promised, he would be performing something special, and indeed he did, bringing out Stormzy for a special remix of number one hit ‘Shape of You.’ Twitter users were beyond excited and this is represented by the majority positive conversation surrounding this performance.

However, the night perhaps was dominated by a man who couldn’t be in attendance. David Bowie won Best Album of the Year for Blackstar and Best British Male. His son collected the awards on his behalf, giving a sterling speech about the legend’s legacy. No one was doubting the man’s legendary status, but there were questions of whether the awards should celebrate newer artists.

The last year has also seen us lose another legend in George Michael. Chris Martin of Coldplay posthumously duetted with him, although this was met with mixed reviews.

To end the night, Robbie Williams took to the stage to perform some of his new material to celebrate the Brits Icon award. This is his 18th Brit in his career, making him the most celebrated artist in Brits history. However, after expecting to hear some of the biggest hits from his glittering career, fans left mixed reviews for this performance as well.

So overall, it was just another year at The Brit Awards – mishaps, mediocre performances, and controversial decisions.
