The Advertising Efficiency Trap: What Social Conversations Reveal About the Fight for Human Attention

Thanks to AI, advertising is becoming faster and more automated than ever before. Our analysis of approximately 13.2 million online conversations about advertisements over three months shows a market undergoing rapid transformation, shaped by AI-powered automation.  Here we reveal 5 clear tensions in the ‘new age’ of advertising.

A clear tension runs through the conversation. While the industry pursues greater efficiency and personalisation, consumers continue to call for more control, transparency and authenticity.

1. AI Is Reshaping Advertising Operations

AI-driven marketing automation is attracting growing interest as advertisers explore tools for content creation, audience planning and campaign optimisation.

AI search and conversational commerce are featured even more prominently as brands consider how to remain visible within emerging discovery environments.

For marketing teams, the value lies in combining machine-led speed with a human understanding of cultural context, consumer motivations and brand relevance.

2. Better Measurement Is Becoming a Business Priority

Performance measurement and accountability features prominently in conversations as advertisers seek clearer attribution, cross-channel reporting and metrics connected to business outcomes. Omnichannel activation and data integration were also among the most widely discussed trends, reflecting demand for more unified audience and campaign intelligence.

However, many conversations highlight remaining limitations, including broad targeting and insufficient context as barriers to understanding whether clicks and engagement translate into genuine consumer action.

3. When Personalisation Becomes “Uncomfortable”

Consumers want relevant advertising, although it is apparent that the data used to create that relevance can cause discomfort. Conversations about opaque personal data collection sit alongside concerns about personalisation perceived as invasive or “creepy”.

Social conversations capture the unease that campaign metrics cannot: whether targeting feels useful, inexplicable or intrusive. AI-generated ads introduce a further concern, with discussions about deepfakes, synthetic performers and undisclosed AI content pointing to a desire for clearer signals when material has been generated or manipulated.

4. Authenticity Is Becoming Harder to Identify

Authentic storytelling and community-driven brand building generated substantial discussion, while short-form video remained another prominent theme. Both reflect continued appetite for immediate, relatable and shareable comms.

However, people also highlight difficulties distinguishing authentic content from advertising.

Conversations around AI-generated advertising designed to resemble user-generated content show that an informal production style alone does not make advertising feel authentic. Audiences also look for credible voices, relatable experiences and clear disclosure when content is commercially produced or AI-generated.

5. Consumers Want More Control Over the Advertising They Receive

Pre-existing tensions remain prevalent in social conversations too.

Frustration over ads appearing in paid premium subscriptions, limited ability to skip or ads and restrictions surrounding ad-blocking tools remain points of contention

Together, these conversations indicate that increased advertising efficiency cannot compensate for an experience that feels intrusive or beyond the consumer’s control.

For advertising and marketing teams, the findings point towards a shared priority: use AI to improve operations, connect measurement to meaningful outcomes, but also establish transparent rules for data and synthetic content, and give consumers practical control over frequency and preferences.

The strongest opportunity is to make advertising more efficient while protecting the qualities that earn attention: relevance, credibility and respect.
